Have you ever been disturbed in a movie theater by the aggressive ringtone of a cell phone? Your problem could be solved soon. NaturalNano is currently developing a cell phone blocking paint that could prevent all cell phone signal from going in and out of a building.
Halloysite nanotubes coated with copper blended with the paint can prevent specific radio frequency ranges from entering or leaving a room. The paint can be applied to the exterior of a building to prevent any cell phone signal from entering it. To enable transmissions in specific rooms, a small antenna which will relay the signal outside can be installed in the room.
This anti-cell phone paint, however, raises some public safety concerns. Because it would hinder communications greatly in the case of an emergency, cell phone blocking has been made illegal in many states by public safety officials.
I could see the cell phone blocking paint used first in detention centers, where many prisoners can get a hand on cell phones and continue their activities while being detained. However, I don’t think we’ll see anti-cell phone rooms in public buildings anytime soon because of the safety concerns it would raise.

Cell phone signals can be blocked and there is no law on the books to stop it. Your statement on safety is bunk…we did not use cell phones and they were safe then. Currently any business wanting to block or shield themselves using paint or other material can and should if they feel the need.
As Billy said, we managed to survive these long years without cell phones. Sure, they are a major source of communication but people wont die in large numbers if the signal was blocked in certain areas.
Signs can be marked to show that cell signals are being blocked and people can act accordingly with that info. Presumably land lines can still work in these areas so emergency communication is still possible.
just wanna know is there any other way to block mobile signal other than using the paint?
thankyou
“The Wireless Communications Act of 1934 prohibits any person from willfully or maliciously interfering with the radio communications of any station licensed or authorized under the Act or operated by the U.S. government. 47 U.S.C. Section 333. The manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale, including advertising, of devices designed to block or jam wireless transmissions is prohibited. 47 U.S.C. Section 302a(b). Parties in violation of these provisions may be subject to the penalties set out in 47 U.S.C. Sections 501-510. Fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year, and the device used may also be seized and forfeited to the U.S. government.”
The FCC maintains that once it has granted a license for the use of specific frequencies, it is not within the purview of privately owned businesses to thwart their transmission for any reason, or by any method. Completely enforceable? Not likely. But I’ll not patronize any business that actively or passively blocks cell reception, and I’ll wager that I’m not alone. Let the market forces prevail, my friends, and we’ll see who’s got the most financial juice these days; the Luddites or the Technophiles.
It’s not luddite-ish to want peace and quiet! I’m sick of being disturbed by long cell phone conversations in situations where other can’t get away, such as in busses, in waiting rooms, in lines.
I am a school principal and cell phones are
a constant headache in school. We have rules in place but they are difficult to enforce. How can I block signals without breaking the law?
I wish there was a device so I could block cell signal in the school classroom. My students are so busy texting each other and not paying attention to their education then try to blame the teacher when they fail. I am sick of it.
Technically the statute prohibiting the blocking of cell signals can not be enforced since passive blocking of wireless communications does not happen within the room (ie. blocking paint) and since you can provide for the transmission of the signal through an antenna, there is no violation. Also, since you can save text for later publication, there is no violation of freesom of speech. It is granted to be able to speak freely…..there is no guarantee of when it is viewed or heard.
Most students are texting to other students in other classrooms or to their parents (who should know better). If a student is texting and it disturbs a student who is bothered by the sounds of thumbs on keys and perhaps the occassional giggle; doesn’t the latter have a right to an unencumbered education? Is texting to mutiple people simultaneously or even one other when prohibited by the rules of the school moving against their right to assemble? It does impinge the rights of others in the room.
