Steve Jobs announces Apple iPhone!

Steve Jobs announced the iPhone today during his keynote at MacWorld 2007.

Apple iPhone

The iPhone features three devices into one

The iPhone combines three devices into one: a 2 megapixel camera phone, a widescreen iPod able to play music and video files, and a cutting edge internet communication device. The iPhone features a touch-screen 3.5 inch display that will even let your read ebooks! The iPhone is very thin, even thinner than the Motorola RAZR.

The iPhone is more than just a phone

There is no doubt that the iPhone will be a great piece of technology: it will even run a version of Apple’s operating system OS X. Wifi ready, the iPhone will let you access the internet anywhere with the Safari browser. Coming standard with Google and Yahoo search, you’ll be able to synchronize your bookmarks between your PC and the iPhone. Full multitasking is also supported.

The iPhone has huge memory capacity

What’s more - the iPhone will come with a huge flash memory capacity. We’re talking 4GB and 8GB. That’s enough memory to hold about 1 full DVD movie or 1600 songs!

Apple iPhone

Before it was even announced, the iPhone was already a legend. Apple will score big with the release of the iPhone, which is due in June 2007.

iPhone Begins?

According to Reuters, Apple and Softbank Corp. are working together on a cell phone with iPod capabilities.

The phone will be able to download songs through Apple’s iTune Music Store, and the two companies expect to release a product early this year that will allow you to download music over wireless networks.

It is only rumors and speculations that this alliance of Apple and Softbank Corp will give birth to the iPhone, but it is a possibility.

Apple doesn’t have much choice but to start innovating in the area of digital music, as cell phones get more and more multimedia capabilities. See Is the reign of the iPod coming to an end? for my take on the subject.

US considers legalizing cell phone usage on airline flights

“The FCC has said it could allow the service as early as next year. The Federal Aviation Administration has signaled that as long as airlines are confident it poses no safety threat, it would be in favor of lifting the ban as well.

Yet those who cherish cellphone-free flying sanctuaries still have hope. A study published this month found that - counter to what many Americans believe - cellphone radio signals do “present a clear and present danger” by interfering with sensitive navigational equipment.”

From Cellphone chats at 35,000 feet? US considers legalizing them on airline flights.

It’s about time they consider this. If cell phones or electronic devices posed such a threat to navigational equipment, they would probably enforce a much more serious ban.

Interactive TV on your cell phone

“AirPlay Network, a startup based in San Francisco, is launching a suite of games that are tied to live television shows. By signing up, you can predict what is going to happen on Monday Night Football, who is going to be the next American Idol, or what the correct answer is to that vexing question on Jeopardy!”

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission wants all cellular phone conversation recorded and archived

“Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) asked the mobile phone operators to record all conversations as well as to archive all text and multimedia messages and to make them available to the government whenever it wants.

Muhammad Omar Farooq, BTRC’s chairman, sent a confidential letter to the operators on Thursday ordering them to install “lawful interception” system without outlining the details. He also asked the operators to “maintain call related information and have provision for maintaining call content, so that on the request of the requiring bodies, this can be made available to them forthwith.”

Sources said BTRC had a series of meetings with the operators on the eavesdropping issue and the operators always agreed to link their respective networks with the government’s recording facilities. In those meetings the regulator said the government will record the calls and messages but now it is asking the operators to do that job.

“How can we install ‘lawful interception’ system when it is unlawful at the first place?” commented a mobile operator’s high official requesting anonymity. He dubbed the directive as “grossly inconsistent” because recording the conversation of any customer or preserving clients’ messages is totally illegal for any operator and the telecoms law as well as the license strictly mandates them to maintain customers’ privacy.”

Korea is offering cash rewards for turning in producers of cloned cell phones

“The Korean government plans to offer a reward of a maximum 10 million won for those who report producers of cloned cell phones.

Every cell phone has a unique factory-set electronic serial number (ESN). A cloned phone is one illegally programmed to have an identical ESN as a legitimate handset.

Cloning of cell phones has emerged as a social headache in Korea, where more than 38 million among the country’s total 48 million population are subscribed to mobile telephone services.

The number of cloned phones detected by the ministry decreased from 1,097 units in 2003 to 858 in 2004. But the figure exploded almost eight-fold to 6,574 last year.

In the hands of unscrupulous people, cloned cell phones can be used to wiretap conversations of legitimate handset owners as well as commit other identity theft-based crimes.”
