Katana II by SANYO runs on the Sprint Vision network and features a VGA camera, voice SMS and Sprint Mobile Email allowing users to access their email from popular providers simply by entering their username and password with no downloads required.

Both devices retain the thin profile introduced on the original Katana phone updated with a new luxurious finish. Katana DLX by SANYO is available in Platinum Ice, Champagne and Pink Satin. Katana II by SANYO is available in Cosmic Black, Pink Fascination and Midnight Steel.

Features shared by both Katana II by SANYO and Katana DLX by SANYO include power save mode, phone as modem, Bluetooth® wireless technology, wireless backup for easily restoring contact information if the phone is ever lost, stolen or damaged and a large QVGA main display. infoSync World reviews the Sanyo Katana DLX and writes - “Sanyo makes solid phones, in terms of making and receiving calls, and the Katana DLX won’t disappoint fans looking for a solid, affordable phone with good features and some 3G amenities. However, none of the more advanced features stand out. The QVGA screen doesn’t pop like screens on recent Nokia N-Series devices. Streaming video was disappointingly halted by poor network reception, and the Sprint music store, though great in a pinch, is a let-down as a dedicated music player. The design seems dated already.”

Phone Arena reviews the Sanyo Katana DLX and writes - “The DLX is also capable of good quality MP3 music playback, even though the speaker is located on the back and there are no external music controls. The Call Quality and Reception both remain the phones main strong points. There was very little static during calls and the phone was able to place calls in fringe areas, where other phones could not. Overall, the Katana DLX is a good quality phone that is designed for the average consumer that is looking for a device with many useful features.”

Brighthand reviews the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 and writes - “There’s no doubt about it, the Pearl is a huge step forward for RIM. This smartphone offers features that many current and potential BlackBerry users have been wanting for years. But, for all its progress, I think this company still has a ways to go. Its implementation of some of the new multimedia features in the Pearl is a bit clumsy and are in real need of polish. And it still lacks features business users want, like better and easier access to Microsoft Office files. At the same time, the feature that was RIM’s biggest advantage for many years–push email–is available now on many other devices. All in all, I think this is a decent smartphone, and certainly better RIM’s first one, the BlackBerry 7100 series. But it still needs some work if it’s going to stand up to the competition.”

CNET has a review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 - “The RIM BlackBerry Pearl is the first BlackBerry to offer a 1.3-megapixel camera, music and video playback, expandable memory, and a mapping application. The supersleek phone also continues to offer superior push e-mail capabilities, EDGE support, and Bluetooth. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl’s microSD slot is inconveniently located behind the battery, and call quality was subpar in our tests. The phone’s camera doesn’t record video, and we wish there were external controls for the music player and integrated Wi-Fi. Though nothing revolutionary, the addition of multimedia features and the already solid e-mail capabilities make the RIM BlackBerry Pearl an attractive device for business users and consumers alike.”

The Globe and Mail reviews the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 - “In the end, the Pearl is all about the sweet spot; for such a wisp of a thing, it’s an awful lot of machine. Considering how many things it does, and how well, you may be amazed to learn that no laws of physics were broken in the making of this phone.”

CNET reviews the Motorola RAZR V3xx and says - “The Motorola Razr V3xx cell phone offers decent call quality, stereo Bluetooth, and a great interior display. And thanks to the HSDPA data connection, it offers zippy Web browsing, fast downloads, and admirable streaming video quality. The Motorola Razr V3xx isn’t a quadband world phone, and its 1.3-megapixel camera is inadequate for such a high-end handset. Also, the voice dialing is unreliable, the phone lacks stereo speakers, and the data settings for third-party applications are too restrictive. Though its feature set didn’t live up to expectations, the Motorola Razr V3xx cell phone improves on many of the traditional Razr pitfalls that have plagued the product line since its inception. As such, it’s the most satisfying Razr to date.”

infoSync World reviews the Motorola RAZR V3xx and says - “The Motorola RAZR V3xx is the pinnacle of RAZR phones — as well it should be, given that Moto has had nearly four years to perfect this aging model. Its only competitor among the other RAZRs is the V3i, but only because we’re fans of that phone’s iTunes music app. We liked the V3xx’s crisp and bright high-resolution screen, along with its clear-sounded calls, robust calling options, and solid video (although it’s hard to recommend a phone for streaming video clips with true mobile TV around the corner). Otherwise, the V3xx features all our favorite options, like stereo Bluetooth support and compatibility with our downloaded Napster tunes. There is room for improvement, of course, especially with the phone’s still-bland interface and music player. That said, if you’re dying to jump onto the RAZR bandwagon at this late date, the V3xx is the one to get.”

CoolTechZone reviews the Motorola RAZR V3xx and writes - “The V3xx is a respectable candidate, and an update to the slowly dying RAZR line. We would’ve expected Motorola to blowout the rest of the RAZR phones with the V3xx, but it clearly failed. If you are one of the few people who don’t have a RAZR, maybe this could be a fit for you, assuming you don’t tend to make too many important calls on your cell phone. For the price of $79 with a 2-year contract, it’s quite a steal.”

The Nokia 6301 UMA cell phone introduces the UMA technology to allow for better indoor coverage by transmitting voice information over WLAN, meaning it can basically bypass cellular waves by borrowing a WiFi internet connection and reverting back to the GSM network when you’re out of range. This is very interesting because it means the cellular phone can be used indoor much like a regular land-line, and it probably means that you can also save money by bypassing carrier fees when you’re around a WiFi connection. It is expected to ship in Europe at the end of 2007.

Washington Post reviews the Motorola RAZR2 V9m from Verizon and writes - “The RAZR2 is a good, well designed cell phone in hardware terms; both screens are great and the keypad is comfortable. However, the software on Verizon’s version simply doesn’t take advantage of this hardware; it doesn’t allow you to do things like play videos on the external screen. The lack of a software upgrade means the user experience is much the same as the original Razr, only with a much more inflated price. As this is the case, we don’t feel the RAZR2 V9m is a good deal at this point. It’s not a bad phone, but the upgrades are just not worth the extra cost.”

CNET has reviewed the Motorola RAZR2 V9 from AT&T and says - “The Motorola Razr2 V9 is a fabulous-looking phone clad in steel and glass. It has HSDPA support plus a 2-megapixel camera, a music player, and good sound quality and battery life. The Motorola Razr2 V9 has skinny side buttons and a rather flat keypad. We also wished there were one-push access to the music player plus one for the speakerphone. The Motorola Razr2 V9 is a great successor to the first Razr. Despite a few quibbles, it has an eye-catching design, solid performance, and an impressive feature set.”

LAPTOP Magazine has a review of the Motorola RAZR2 V9 from AT&T and writes - “Although the Motorola RAZR2 V9 is pricey, its excellent voice quality, smooth Web-surfing, loads of multimedia content, and beautiful design make it one of best mobiles that Motorola has ever produced and one of the best with AT&T, period.”

PC Magazine reviews the Motorola RAZR2 V9 from AT&T and says - “As long as you aren’t interested in Video Share, Motorola now makes AT&T’s two best phones, the V9 and the V3xx. Which one you pick depends largely on your budget. The V9 is a better device, although not by much–the difference is largely CrystalTalk and the more luxurious case. Dev Hardware has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and says - “For the traveling professional, or anyone who needs to keep in touch while traveling, this may be the smart phone that you have been waiting for. The RIM Blackberry 8830 “Cyclone” is a very solid device overall, and is one of the best smart phones on the market today. Sony has announced the Sony Ericsson Z610 cell phone this week. The Z610 is a small cell phone that has both style and a unique design.

The Sony Ericsson Z610 has a sleek mirror finish and comes in a clamshell form. The unique design features an outside OLED display that blends perfectly well with the rest of the phone, so much that it is invisible when turned off. When the user receives an event such as a phone call or a SMS message, the outside display turns on and shows information that seem to be floating on the surface of the phone.

It’s not all about the design; the Sony Ericsson Z610 has a lot of technology under the hood. The 2.0 megapixel camera has a 2.5x digital zoom and allows the user to take pictures and upload them directly to the internet on a blog using the Picture Blog application that comes with the phone. Furthermore, the Z610 supports both music and video playback along with 3D games and 3G capabilities. As if it weren’t enough, the cell phone is also compatible with Bluetooth Stereo and it comes with a 64mb Memory Stick Micro that is upgradeable.

The Sony Ericsson Z610 is a fine piece of technology and it looks very promising. It will be available this fall in Europe.

GSM Arena reviews the Sony Ericsson Z610 and writes - “Sony Ericsson Z610 will provide you with 3G support, a standard 2 megapixel camera, a music player, and a Memory Stick Micro card slot. Not a bad offer, don’t you think? I am just a bit reluctant about the absence of EDGE and Infrared port. The dust-covered camera lens (a consequence of the lack of protection) and the rather unnecessary state diode in one of the phone’s corners won’t probably excite users either.”

Pocket-lint reviews the Sony Ericsson Z610 and says - “In the flesh though and it’s seems to have been a disappointment all round. Sony Ericsson should be applauded for not skimping on features just because they have made a phone that looks good, and for this the Z610 clearly out-performs any competition in the fashion genre, but as a fashion phone it is as shallow as a catwalk model.”

If you’re looking for a futuristic cellphone that still maintains a nice elegant look, the Samsung A930 might be just for you. The A930 is currently available from Verizon in the United States.

The Samsung A930 is black with an external display that makes it look like a digital music player. The blue LCD screen on the outside of the A930 is large enough to display the titles of the song currently playing, along with additional information such as battery level and signal strength. The Samsung A930 has a clamshell form and it has multimedia buttons on its cover to provide easy access to the music playback capabilities. While the exterior of the A930 is quite appealing, the interior looks a bit dated in my opinion.

From a technological standpoint, the Samsung A930 offers the standard features usually available to mid-range cellphones. The A930 features dual speakers for stereo sound and can play back music and video from the V CAST service. The integrated 1.3 megapixel digital camera and cam recorder has a rotating lens and even a built-in flash! The A930 has also built-in GPS capabilities and is compatible with software applications that make use of this feature.

The Samsung A930 is a nice looking clamshell cellphone with a lot to offer in terms of multimedia capabilities, and a notable technological feature is the built-in flash that most cellphones in this category lack.

Meanwhile, road warriors will appreciate the phone’s speedy data and dial-up networking abilities.”

PC Magazine reviews the Samsung A930 and writes - “The Samsung SCH-a930 isn’t a bad phone, especially if all you want to do is make voice calls. But if you’re interested primarily in that, the Motorola V325 cuts a sharper figure. Among multimedia phones, Samsung’s own a950 has superior data performance and very good voice quality, and the LG Chocolate VX8500 has far better music capabilities. I’d recommend one of those models instead.”

LAPTOP Magazine reviews the Samsung A930 and writes - “All of these extras wouldn’t mean much if the SCH-a930 stumbled in its intended purpose: communication. The phone maintained a strong signal in our tests, and we experienced hiccup-free calls, with good sound quality on both ends of the conversation. This clamshell features 3.8 hours of talk time.”

The LG VX8500 cell phone, also known as the LG Chocolate, is now available from Verizon in the United States. The LG Chocolate has a very nice look which bears resemblance to Apple’s iPod, except it’s in black and it slides open to reveal the keypad. The phone itself is a combination of a media player and a cellphone and it has a great look, but the design is a bit flaky.

From a technological point of view, the LG Chocolate offers a 1.3 megapixels digital camera and cam recorder, a microSD memory expansion slot, and of course music and video playback. The digital camera supports a 2x digital zoom, which is a pretty small zoom, and the 1.3MP resolution is nothing new in the world of digital convergence. The phone has 64 megabytes of internal memory and the lithium-ion battery is enough to power it for 16 days of standby time or 3.5 hours of talk time. The technological features are pretty standard nowadays, but the design is what makes the cell phone stand out.

At first glance, the LG Chocolate phone looks just like a black iPod with a 262k colors, 240 x 320 pixel display. It has its main media controls on its front navigation wheel and it features additional media buttons on the left side. It is small and lightweight, and the dialing keypad is revealed by sliding down the bottom part of the phone. Sadly, the touch-sensitive navigation wheel is hard to use - it’s either too sensitive or too hard to press, depending on the settings you give it. The ‘End’ button used to turn the phone on and off and to terminate calls is also small and in a counterintuitive location. The cell phone is also reported having trouble reading ID3 tags from MP3 files, and the music software is not as good as it should be.

Overall, the LG Chocolate phone is still a very handsome phone with all the technological features you would expect in today’s cellphone. If you can get around the somewhat flawed design and software, it is a very good mid-range cellphone for the portable music enthusiast.

CNET reviews the LG Chocolate and gives it a 7.0 rating - “The LG Chocolate has a sharp design; satisfying overall performance; and a multimedia-rich feature set that includes Bluetooth, a digital music player, and a megapixel camera with admirable photo quality. The LG Chocolate’s unique touch pad and controls entail a steep learning curve, and the phone suffers from poor streaming video quality and low talk-time battery life. The lack of a speakerphone is disappointing. Though the LG Chocolate is beautifully designed and offers a respectable mix of features and performance, it doesn’t quite live up to the hype.”

PC Magazine has a review of the LG Chocolate and writes - “That said, if you’re looking for a music-phone on Verizon, learning the Chocolate is worth the effort. This is Verizon’s best music-phone by a long shot. It supports stereo Bluetooth, playing music easily through our wireless Plantronics Pulsar 590 headphones. It has a roomy 68 MB of on-board memory, accepts MicroSD memory cards up to 2 GB, and – finally – can play both WMA and MP3 files natively in Verizon’s V CAST Music player. You can put music on the phone by dumping it into a MicroSD card, or syncing it via USB cable with Windows Media Player.”

Phone Scoop reviews the LG Chocolate - “ Many people will buy the Chocolate based on its looks alone, and for those people, it’s probably a perfectly good phone. It is an excellent performer in many regards - battery life, Bluetooth usage for calls and music, and messaging.”

The Motorola Pebl U6 bears its name well - it looks just like a pebble. Motorola kept the design of the Pebl U6 is very simple. It is small, roundish, and it flips open.

The Pebl U6 has a somewhat disappointing 0.3 megapixel camera. Many cell phones now come with a 1 megapixel camera and higher. The Pebl is also unable to play MP3 files, but with its 5mb memory you wouldn’t fit more than one or two songs on the phone anyway. It does support MP3 ringtones though, which is in my opinion the only use I could find for MP3s on a cell phone. Most phones don’t sound nearly as good as a real MP3 player anyway.

On the plus side, the Pebl U6 supports a wide range of GSM networks and the sound quality of the phone is reported to be very good during calls.

On paper, the Pebl U6 looks like it’s your standard average multimedia phone. The look, however, is still unique.
