Motorola goes Feng Shui

Trying to innovate, Motorola has recently patented a way to evaluate a location based on the Feng Shui principles using a cell phone. The idea is to basically use the digital camera and GPS locator, among other features, to evaluate how “Feng Shui” the place is.

The idea in itself is great and innovative. However, does it really have a use? Is Motorola really going to spend their R&D money into this? I am sure they could come up with ideas that would be a lot more useful than this.

According to Unwired View, in order for the idea to work with a cell phone, the device will need:

  1. Three-dimensional Hall-effect sensor for measuring the strength of electromagnetic fields and to form a compass to determine the geographic direction in which the main wall of the house faces.
  2. Digital camera to determine color saturation, order and balance of the surroundings.
  3. GPS receiver to determine geographic location of the phone.
  4. An access to the GIS database through wireless network to get the information about the surroundings of the location, e.g. the distance from the undesirable sites such as major airports, landfills, and factories.
  5. Cellphone microphone, to measure noise level of the location.
  6. AM/FM radio to measure the AM and FM transmission strength and the distance form nearest AM/FM towers.
  7. The table with the chi values of each parameter to be used for calculation of chi values of different parameters.

  1. […] This is but one possible application of image recognition in mobile phones. For example, you could take a picture of a sentence written on a panel in a foreign language and have it translated automatically by the image recognition software. The Feng Shui phone will probably use this kind of technology to do its processing. The possibilities are endless and this technology will add a lot of value to camera phones.
